Vesna Rudelic, the baker behind Croatian Confections, is inspired by her European upbringing and her adopted home in Westchester. In most Croatian households, including her own, baking recipes are passed down throughout the generations. Baking from scratch and using ingredients mainly found within one's home or from the local farm is a necessity when baking these types of recipes: fresh butter and eggs, flour, fruit preserves. During Vesna's childhood, traditional baked goods would be made on weekends and for any special occasion, and the smell of them would bring joy every time.
"I always baked and enjoyed decorating cookies and cakes. When I was little, I was always watching my grandma and mom baking and using ingredients produced in our own garden and fresh eggs. It was always important to use what was locally available. With a lot of love put into the baking and using fresh organic ingredients, following traditional Croatian recipes but also giving a try to new flavors, you get products that are a little bit different and also very tasty," says Vesna.
Her decision to start the baking business came after many years of dreaming about having the opportunity to share a taste of Croatia within the USA. Vesna sees baking as a way to connect her two cultures and to connect with people, "Baking genuinely makes me happy and I hope that trying my home baked goods makes you just as happy while experiencing a little bit of the Croatian culture," she says.
