If you are looking for someone in the Kaplan family, it's best to go straight to the kitchen. "My Mom has always shared her love of food," explains Eli Kaplan, co-founder of Mom & Icepops, "Anyone who came over to our house growing up, always ended up hanging out in the kitchen." In sharing her passion for food, Eli's mom Lorraine also raised her children to join in its preparation. Eli adds, "Mom often made me and my sister responsible for some aspect of our dinner as kids. She gave us her love of cooking."
Years later, Eli and his mom were strolling the High Line on a hot New York City summer day, when they stopped to eat something cold. The iced treat invigorated them and they started talking about ice pops and dreaming up creative flavor mixes using fresh, healthy fruit. Each step brought a new idea: Rhubarb and lavender. Step. Rosemary and grapefruit. Step. By the time they got to the city street below, they declared, "Alright, let's do this!"
From there they began, in Eli's words, "a year of recipes." They experimented with over 75 flavor combinations. As a test, Eli would take the latest creation to a friend's party. After leaving empty-handed time after time, they decided there was a market for their unique treats. They then started the business of Mom & Icepops in earnest.
Since the beginning, their company has been a community effort. Eli says, "It's taken a lot of people's contribution. I've had friends drive me to pick up dry ice needed that day," and worked "side-by-side with farmers to get our ingredients."
He goes on to describe a broader circle of community: inspiration from other great cooks in the world. "Just like a musician gets inspired by a great live show, I get inspired anytime I go out to eat. We're learning as we go along, and all aspects of the creative process contribute to that."
