Farming
Mushrooms.NYC is just that, growers of fresh gourmet mushrooms, based in New York. They are family-owned and run by a collective of long-time friends who came together through their passion for urban farming and sustainability. They took on urban farming when they saw its potential as a great asset for the city, for food security and for general health.
The mushrooms grown by Mushrooms.NYC are rich in complete proteins and B vitamins, packed with other essential vitamins and minerals and provide unique flavors and textures. They are quick and easy to prepare and offer an ideal alternative to meat in many recipes.
Mushrooms.NYC is a "Storehouse Co-op," a cooperative business that is part of a larger network that shares vital resources for public benefit, called a Storehouse. A Storehouse is a Baha'i institution which has been in development all over the world for over 170 years. One of the most developed Storehouse networks, called FUNDAEC, started in Colombia 40 years ago and now boasts 150,000 farmers. A FUNDAEC founder encouraged Mushrooms.NYC to start such a network around NYC, so for the last eight years they have been focused on making such a network, grounded in regenerative practices and in creating healthy topsoil. The farmers are also inspired by Nature, and from this grass roots, person-to-person community of practitioners, participants, and customers, are creating the beginnings of a new economy around the bioregion of NYC.
