R&G Produce is a diversified family farm in Orange County, within the famous black dirt growing region. The region is famous for its flavorful onions but is now home to a new generation of farmers who are taking advantage of the naturally moist and nutrient-rich soil to grow other crops. "My grandfather cleared our land and for two generations we were exclusively onion farmers. But the ground started to need new crops, so my brother, Ray, and I switched to greens in the late 1990s. Today we have over fifty varieties of vegetables and herbs," explains Gary Glowaczewski of R & G Produce.
When the brothers first began selling at farmers markets, they would arrive in their 1977 straight box truck with a couple of little tables in the back. Now, during the height of the growing season, they bring produce harvested by fifty workers on their 300-acre farm. Their business thrives due to one longstanding pledge: to listen to their customers. "At the markets, we talk to a lot of different people from different cultures. People suggest new things -- I may not be able to pronounce it, but I'll track it down," says Gary.
